If water has seeped under the roof material the underlying material may become damaged.

Replace them with rubber washered screws.
Screws will not grip well on a rotted wood surface.
Remember a screw down metal roof has the fasteners exposed through the top of the panels.
Pipe flashing covered by too few screws.
You might be tempted to throw caulk at the problem but that solution won t last long.

There s really no fix other than replacing the damaged vents.
The purpose of the spacing is related to the drip edge.
The metal roof paneling is supposed to end up about two to three inches below the home s vented ridge and should be two to three inches beyond the roof s eaves according to absolute steel metal roofing instructions.
This applies to the gable edge and the bottom end of the roof.
Let the panel overhang by about an inch and a half to 2 inches.
Also look for pulled or missing nails at the base s bottom edge.
Due to its lack of expansion and contraction these fasteners get wallowed out until they re too big for the screws that hold the metal panels down.
Check for cracked housings on plastic roof vents and broken seams on metal ones.
